À Conversa com Misa on Wheels

[You can find the english version of this post after the portuguese translation]

Quem é a Misa?

Qual é a tua favorita?

Hello everyone. As you know I had started to do interviews with people who I think that they are examples to follow, interesting and whose work deserves some attention.

The cosplayer community is huge, there are thousands around the world, but there is a person who has highlighted, in my opinion, as an example of willpower, hardworking and an excellent portfolio :)

Misa On Wheels is for me an excellent example of what the cosplay should be. Fun for all and above all without discrimination. For this reason I invited this cosplayer for a brief conversation :)

IMG_7785ac.jpgFirst of all I’d like you to talk a bit about yourself. Who is Misa?
I am a girl from New Hampshire, USA, who has far too many interests and hobbies!   I was born with Muscular Dystrophy and diagnosed when I was two years-old.  Due to progression of the condition, I had to start using a wheelchair full-time at age ten.  This, however, has never been something that has stood in my way.  My condition is a part of my life, but it does not define who I am.  I am a cosplayer, gamer, painter, animal-lover, and so many other things.  And these are the things that make me who I am.  :)

When did you start cosplaying and why?
I started cosplaying about 8 years ago.  There was no particular reason why, I suppose.  I have always loved dressing up and costumes, so cosplay was a very easy hobby for me to get into.

You are such a great example that cosplay is for everyone. Did you have any problems with bullying?
Not so much in the realm of cosplay, more just in the form of general ignorance due to my visible disability.  The cosplay community has always been very accepting of me and my differences, and this gives me all the more drive to stick up for others who have not been so fortunate.

Do you usually do your own cosplays or buy them?

I buy or design most of mine.  Due to my condition, I have very limited fine motor skills, which makes activities like sewing very difficult.  The dressing-up and theatrical aspects of cosplay are the parts that I enjoy, so those are the parts I focus on.

How do you choose the characters you cosplay?

I mostly choose characters that I love or see a part of myself in.

Which one is your favourite?
Yuna from Final Fantasy X and Misa Amane from the anime Death Note.

What do you think is the most important thing about cosplaying?

Having fun.  Cosplay is a hobby, and, above all else, we need to remember that there is no person or reason that should stop you from doing what you love.

Which advice would you like to leave to portuguese cosplayers?

Remember that cosplay is about being yourself in someone else's clothes.  Yourself.  With your own characteristics and qualities.  You are perfect just the way you are and can do, and cosplay, anything you want!
